the chemistry lesson

below:  Spring…a wind, flowers, a bird…
above:  bitterness…icicles in the soul
all these snowy passions,
the arctic ferocity of hate.

wings dripping venom, the planes turn
toward the sea, toward the searing sun,
leaving behind flakes of white hot jelly,
that burn and melt children’s flesh away.

Wanderings

A barque of discovery is my hand,
venturing from secret place to secret place
among these isles of carnal dreams:
legs sweet and belly flat, rump bold and strong,
the unblinking eyes of naked breasts.

A barque of discovery is my hand,
a prow, parting the firm wildness of your thighs,
riding the storm of your wanton pleasure
that rocks the earthy beauty of your flesh.

A barque of discovery is my hand
anointed with the balm of your sweetness.
My hand: proconsul of my lips,
viceroy of the scepter’s power.

Etymology (for Patti M.)

Your name in Latin means of the upper class,
creme de la crème, or, golden, like your hair.
Your smiling face, touched with an air
of soulful elegance.  Your gem-like eyes,
green and shining as Erin’s fields.
In short, you’re a true lass of life,
well worth an eternity of praise.
Oh, to ramble in the garden with you,
clothed only in mist and our dreams!

Gothic Waggishness

A Chartres you are, a song in flesh.
Your flying buttresses!  Your nave!
Your apse!  Oh, your holy of holies!
It would be glory in the highest
to die within this hallowed space,
like some Becket on the altar –
then, to lie forever facing
your Rose Window!  Ainsi soit-il!

note on a napkin found crumpled after the bar’s closing

To see the children of my fancy
sprawled in ink across the page,
seraphs soaring to the reader’s paradise –
it is, I fear, my great undoing.
Words do my bidding.  Or is it I who do theirs?
With soundless voice, to you they sing:
Our master (the lout!) his greetings sends.
Your grace and beauty quite enchant him.
If it please you, his eyes would joy
to read your script and sense the charm
of your kindly words.  He humbly begs reply.
