adrift at morning

as we boarded the ferryboat
in the hidden dawn
i spied a purple wall of vapor
that stood off a hundred yards from shore
there was no line slashed across the fog
no place where the sweet mist bled away
into the briny water   no horizon
just the melded sky and bay
we kissed
as the boat got under way
