restraint (for Lyn, my bartender)

earth that you are,
oh garden of wishes,
eden of dreams!

lustful as i am,
more than thrice removed
must i be from you.

air i cannot be,
for i would move over you,
gusting like the wind.

nor cloud, for i, like rain,
would fall on you,
a storm of kisses.

nor sun, for i’d flare
and crash, then drown
in the depths of your eyes.

perhaps i can be like the stars:
far enough removed yet seen;
near enough still to gather wishes
before you ready yourself for bed.
