floes

bands of ice across the bay
driven
separated
by winds   by currents

floes:  large   small   amid mush ice:
all fitted together
not like a jigsaw puzzle
but the mosaic in a basilica’s floor

on some of the floes   seagulls squat
motionless
contemplating
this enigma   life
