(1) burlesque
trees strip off their leaves
motley rags falling earthward
red tan russet gold

(2) magic
trees set free their leaves
butterflies floating earthward
red tan russet gold

It’s so true, isn’t it? The words we choose to use make ALL the difference in the way the reader sees what we show him and in the way he feels and reacts to it. I teach creative writing at a local college, and one of the points I make to my students repeatedly is that words really do have power and that a responsible writer is always aware of that fact and always careful how he uses that power to affect the world.
This set of haiku is a perfect demonstration of the influence of word choices.
