the visitors (for Lan)

during the night she wakes me
she sees visions   memories
from her childhood
of a troupe of jugglers
storytellers   mimes
musicians   dancers
who several times each year
came to her village
set between the river and the sea

images sparked
by synapses firing randomly
in her clouding brain

she takes my hand
squeezes each time she laughs
‘look honey look   aren’t they delightful’
yes   yes   I say
kiss her cheek    turn away
to weep in silence

haiku

some dry leaves stirring
still on their tree catch my eye
Just hang in there, friend

the beast in me

were I a falcon
I’d obey your every call,
kill upon command
but I’m no trained hunter – no,
just one whose heart leaps at dawn,
whose passions stir in starlight

clear autumn evening, looking west

horizon on fire
orange red sunset flares out
blue black sky   white sparks

haiku

wind-tossed leaves pile up
varicolored    broken    whole
nature recycling

haiku

fog at night plays tricks
with moonlight   the trees   bushes
specters: us, not them

alone in the moonlight

moon  oh moon    kiss me
with your faint   your rapturous light
of that peerless gem you make me think
of her who touched my body and my soul

through the skies
casting dreams you shine
while you make me longing’s shadow
moon  oh moon    bring me
to the depths of life
to the very source of love

now in the dawn you blush much like
my love as excited she would grow
from our labor of joy in the haze
of another day

oh moon    do not forsake me –
but   like her   now you too have gone
