stopping on the footbridge, Snug Harbor

old turtle sunning
on a rock near the footbridge
waits for leaves to fall

examining the dead arborvitae

bagworms wove cocoons
fixing evergreen sprigs fast
around their sleek forms
now male moths crawl out to fly
one being dies so others live

late summer scene: near the lower pond, Snug Harbor

crickets sing and leap
in the tall dry summer grass
far off  a storm builds

odyssey

I am a sloop driven
by blasts of longing
I go drifting through the seas
of your ever changing beauty
I seek refuge along the bounds
of your sinuous flesh
in that strait port   shelter me   love
shelter me    I wish it out of longing
out of the need to deliver
my consignment of honey
and deep affection

definiendum

what exists between us two
is neither love nor lust
it hasn’t a name    it simply is
but if we must give it a name
[the ancients believed
that calling things
by their true names
was to possess them completely]
then let us call it  JOY

lighthearted verses for my Circe

I remember once you told me
that you’re a witch
and I responded:

my lovely sorceress
may your charms transform me
into a wily cat    I’ll be
your most familiar of spirits
I’ll lick you whenever
wherever you may wish
or even better – turn me to a broom
put me between your legs to fly
to the very heights of pleasure

let them both be so   you ordered
then meow and aaah
then whoosh and oooo
oh dearest enchantress
we’ve been ascending ever since
