early morning chess game

through the sky move birds
Pawns on the day’s chessboard
on the earth their little shadows bury themselves
in those more immense ones cast by the clouds
is the sun King or Queen or both pieces
King in its momentary standing
Queen in its driving force
the Knights are the breezes
the East and West are the Castles
the Bishops – North and South
‘but where is the challenger’ ask some lilies
‘over there – he’s kissing his Queen’
so say the tulips as they nod their heads
toward me   well then  little dove  my Queen
we must go and start the game…
perhaps after some more kissing
